MSF “EXPERTS BY EXPERIENCE” – RESOURCE GUIDE AND TOOLKIT

Enabling Factors

There is a combination of factors that influence success or failure of the EBE-Approach. Based on the practice so far, the following are the most important enabling factors that contribute to successful implementation of the EBE-approach.

Governance

Good governance and strong leadership are essential when building the EBE-approach. Developing roles and responsibilities within the EBE-groups cultivates the feeling of ownership of the activities. Also, from the organization’s perspective, it is important to support the whole process with participatory structures and processes.

Communication

Open, clear, and strong communication practices among all actors involved are important. Frequent and consistent communication contributes to trust building and to enhanced participation on behalf of the EBE-group members.

Collaboration & Partnerships

By creating partnerships, building networks, and cultivating long-term trust relationships, EBE-approach initiatives can be sustained over time and can be more effective. Local collaborations can maximize the impact of advocacy activities and ensure a sustained number of participants to the groups.

Resources

The availability of resources for the development and implementation of the EBE initiative by now is evident.

Particularly, resources in the form of organizing the initiative can greatly influence its success. An EBE facilitator  on behalf of MSF or any other supporting organization has a critical role to play. The availability of an accessible space for team meetings and resources to implement activities are equally important. As a whole, when developing an EBE initiative, it is important to make an estimation of human and other resources needed and allocate the budget for it.
